CCPP NUON MAGNUM
The Netherlands

Nuon is developing a new power plant that shall start commercial operation in 2011. The multi-fuel power plant will be based on gasification technology, which is one of the cleanest and most flexible ways of generating electricity from solid or liquid fuels. The power plant will be built in phases, starting with the 1200 MW natural gas fired combined cycle power plant unit. The contract for the combined cycle power plant unit was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) from Takasago/Japan. MHI has awarded the entire civil construction works to Ballast Nedam, Nieuwegein/The Netherlands.

On behalf of MHI, convex ZT GmbH is carrying out the civil design works. The entire plant is founded on prestressed reinforced concrete driven piles. In order to achieve a sufficient noise protection, the Machine Hall and the Boiler are cladded with heavy concrete panels. Although The Netherlands is not a seismic area, a seismic design with a horizontal ground acceleration of ah = 2,4 m/s² is required by the owner to reach a higher safety level of the load bearing structure.
